Emsella is a great option for men and women of any age who desire a non-invasive solution for urinary incontinence, intimate wellness including erectile dysfunction and improvement in their quality of life.

What is Urinary Incontinence?

Urinary incontinence is defined as the involuntary leakage of urine. This might be as a result of weak pelvic floor muscles as they support pelvic organs and control continence. Due to factors such as the body’s normal ageing, childbirth, menopause, or prostatectomy, the pelvic floor muscles decondition and insufficiently support the pelvic organs. The pelvic floor muscles are bowl-shaped and support the pelvic organs including the uterus, prostate, bladder and rectum.

Is Emsella right for you?

According to the Continence Foundation of Australia, incontinence affects 1 in 3 women and 1 in 10 men. Are you one of them? Take a quick test:

Do you leak urine when you cough, sneeze, or engage in sporting activities?

Do you use the bathroom more frequently than you would like?

Have you refrained from intimate life recently due to your own insecurities?

If you answered yes to any of these, you are likely suffering from urinary incontinence. Emsella is the first device of its kind and is approved by the FDA and TGA to treat urinary incontinence.

How it works

Emsella creates a magnetic field with high intensity energy, which causes deep pelvic floor muscle stimulation while you remain fully clothed. The stimulation induces thousands of supramaximal contractions in a single session, which help you train your muscles without any effort. Scientific research shows that 95% of treated patients reported significant improvement to their quality of life.

These forced, supramaximal contractions are unobtainable through conscious movement. The image below shows the muscle response to Emsella compared to doing kegel exercises consciously.

Types of incontinence

There are many types of incontinence, but the most common are:

Stress incontinence – when there is pressure exerted on the bladder casing leakage. This can be caused by coughing, laughing, sneezing or exercising.

Urge incontinence – the sudden and intense urge to urinate frequently.
Physiological changes can contribute to the development of urinary incontinence; changes such as vaginal childbirth, menopause, prostatectomy and ageing can decondition pelvic floor muscles.
In order to improve symptoms, it is important to strengthen these muscles. One of the best ways to improve the strength of your pelvic floor is to perform pelvic floor exercises (kegels).

This causes an increase in both the size and number of muscle fibres, while simultaneously disrupting fat cells. With an ever-increasing wealth of clinical evidence, this mechanism has been confirmed by histology, MRI, CT and ultrasound imagery.

During the

No preparation is required, the procedure itself is very simple, and pain-free.

You will be seated on the Emsella chair and your therapist will advise you how to position correctly. You will remain fully clothed for the treatment; however, we do recommend you come dressed in loosely fitted clothing to help achieve the best positioning.  There can be no metal in the surrounding area (piercings and jewellery must be removed).

When the treatment starts you will feel slight tingling and vibrations in your pelvic floor which will turn into complete muscle contractions. This will be completely comfortable and tolerable, if not, please let your therapist know and they will adjust accordingly.

Due to the type of energy emitted from the chair, you will not be able to use any mobile devices. We recommend you take the time to read your own book, magazine or watch TV.

The protocol for Emsella is six treatments over three weeks, scheduled 2-3 days apart.

After the

Once your session is completed, you can resume your daily activities – there is absolutely no down-time.

In rare cases post-treatment, there can be some temporary muscle spasms in the treated area and mild muscle soreness which subsides in a day or two.

Results can be felt after the first session, but most positive results are reported a couple of weeks after the final treatment.

When the condition affects your sleep by waking you frequently in the night, when it restricts the type of activities that you do, impacts your confidence or causes stress or anxiety.

It is a comfortable treatment. Simply sit on the Emsella chair, fully clothed and the treatment stimulates thousands of muscle contractions. It will feel intense, but there is no pain.
Each session takes half an hour.

A standard course is two 30-minute sessions per week, for three weeks. A total of 6 sessions over 3 weeks.

Many patients feel a benefit after the first treatment with results improving over the three weeks of treatment, however everyone is different.

Kegel or pelvic floor exercises cannot achieve the intensity or number of muscle contractions that the Emsella achieves in a 30-minute session, therefore Emsella is considered more effective. Pelvic floor exercises are recommended throughout and after your treatment to maintain results.

There are no side effects from treatment. Electromagnetic technology has been used in the medical industry for many years (MRI scans for example).

Your suitability for treatment will be determined during your complimentary consultation with our therapist. As this technology relies on magnets, anyone with the following cannot have this treatment:

  • Pregnancy
  • Cardiac pacemaker, defibrillator, implanted neurostimulator, drug pump or electronic
    implanted device
  • Metal rods, pins, plates, metal IUD or orthopaedic implants/joints
  • Pulmonary insufficiency, cardiac disorders, epilepsy or active malignancy
  • Bleeding disorders, or taking blood thinners
  • History of hernia repair with mesh, or any recent surgical procedure in the area
  • Any injury, damage or tear to muscle or soft tissue in the area to be treated including active hernia.

Nothing in life lasts forever and this will vary according to your health condition. The clinical studies show that most patients maintain the results 6 months after their treatment series. However, we recommend booking another appointment when symptoms reappear. Keeping a healthy lifestyle and continuing pelvic floor exercises will help to maintain your results long term.
